About Progreso

Progreso sits at the top of the Yucatán peninsula on the Gulf of Mexico shore, the coast here running broadly east-to-west and facing north into open water. It's a beach town close to Mérida, and that proximity means infrastructure that a purely remote kite destination wouldn't have: a working waterfront strip, restaurants, beach clubs, and enough passing trade to keep things open during peak season. The wind case for this spot is straightforward. The north-facing coast sits in the path of NE trade winds for most of the season, and during winter months the Norte cold fronts add a different gear — these are the systems that push the top end of the wind range and deliver some of the most memorable days on the water. Combined, the two patterns give this stretch of Yucatán coast more than 300 wind days per year, and the usable window — west through north to east — arrives cross-onshore. On a north-facing beach, cross-onshore means the shore stays to your side rather than directly downwind, which is a significant safety margin at launch and if something goes wrong out on the water. The core season runs December through June. Winds typically come in at 15–30 knots through this period; the NE trades tend toward the middle of that range and the Norte events can reach the upper end and beyond. If a Norte is forecast, this is a size-down day — the fronts build quickly and the change from steady trade wind to Norte strength can happen fast. The cross-onshore angle is forgiving, the wind is consistent within the season, and the wide kite window means you're not dealing with a difficult offshore angle at launch.
