About Dakhla

Dakhla sits at the tip of a narrow peninsula that juts south into a vast, shallow lagoon on Morocco's southern Atlantic coast — the Río de Oro region, historically remote but now one of the most talked-about kite destinations in Africa. The lagoon is the draw: flat and wide, with a year-round NNE trade wind blowing side-shore across the water. That consistent angle means you're not fighting a direct headwind on the walk out and not drifting offshore on the main riding area — for an exposed Atlantic location, conditions can feel surprisingly manageable. The approach to Dakhla is a long one. Fly into Dakhla Airport or make the drive south through Morocco. The town sits on the peninsula, and most kite camps are strung along the lagoon edge handling logistics — gear storage, launch access, safety briefings — so you land, drop bags, and you're essentially already at the water. The main lagoon launch is sheltered and flat, making it well-suited to learning and progression. The water character is the kind that draws kiters back year after year: a consistent surface with room to ride without constantly looking over your shoulder at oncoming traffic. Side-shore NNE wind means water-starts are straightforward and you naturally stay within the lagoon boundary rather than being pushed out to open sea. There is a second zone known as the Speed Spot. Here the wind goes offshore, which fundamentally changes the risk profile. This area is strictly for supervised riding with experienced safety cover in place. If you're not sure whether you qualify, the answer is that you don't yet. Kite camps in the area will brief you on this before you ever launch there — take that briefing seriously. Hazards are worth flagging directly: the offshore conditions at the Speed Spot are real and the consequences of gear failure or an unexpected crash there are serious. On the main lagoon the side-shore angle is forgiving, but the lagoon is shallow in places and the depth can change depending on conditions. For accommodation, Dakhla has a solid cluster of kite-oriented bases along the water: Caravan by Habitas Dakhla, Dakhla Attitude, Dakhla Club, Dakhla Evasion, Dakhla Spirit, and PK25 Dakhla all cater to riders at various price points and styles. Most offer direct lagoon access. Book well ahead — this is not a walk-in destination. Year-round wind makes Dakhla unusually flexible for planning, though peak season draws the biggest crowds. If flat-water progression or reliable conditions are what you're after, this lagoon delivers.
