Dune Blanche sits in the middle of the Dakhla lagoon — a 10-metre-high white sand island that rises out of the turquoise water like a natural landmark. Getting here is part of the experience: the classic approach is a downwinder of around three hours from the main kite camps on the lagoon shore, riding N/NNE wind that carries you steadily down the bay. You don't drive to this one — you ride to it. The island earns its name. The dune is genuinely white, steep-sided, and tall enough to block the wind on its lee face — and that's exactly where the flat water sits. That sheltered zone is glassy and shallow, a distinct contrast after the open lagoon crossing. The windward face catches the full force of the N/NNE breeze and offers a natural ramp for riders who want to use it. Wind runs N/NNE at typically 15–25 knots, consistent with the broader Dakhla lagoon system. The lagoon is well-protected from ocean swell, which keeps the water state predictable — but that same shelter means if conditions deteriorate, you're a long way from shore with limited options. It's worth holding that thought when you're deciding whether to go. Launching from the island is straightforward — there's beach in multiple directions, so you can usually find an angle that suits the day's conditions. There's no formal infrastructure on the island itself: no kiosk, no patrol, no anchored rescue boat. Self-sufficiency is not optional. Let someone at camp know your plan, carry a waterproof phone or radio, and time your window carefully. The lagoon shore is well-equipped for instruction and gear.
