About Ouddorp
Ouddorp sits at the western tip of Goeree-Overflakkee, a narrow island in South Holland where the North Sea meets the coast without any softening. The beach stretching away from the village is the longest in the Netherlands at 18 kilometres — room enough to set up, depower and drift without crowding your neighbours. That said, the generous sand does not make this a forgiving spot. The water here demands respect, and it gets it from anyone who has ridden it more than once. Getting to Ouddorp means driving out to the end of the island. Parking is limited, and on a day worth riding it fills up. Arrive early, plan the short walk from the car park to the beach, and do not expect to roll up at noon in peak season and walk straight onto the water. The village also markets itself as Ouddorp aan Zee, so there is tourist infrastructure around, but the spot itself is as raw as the coast. The usable wind window runs from 190° to 350° — southerly through to north-northwest — which covers the dominant southwest and northwest systems that drive wind across this stretch of Dutch coastline. Westerlies push up medium-sized waves along the beach, so on those days you are not riding flat water. If you want bump-and-jump rather than a glassy session, westerlies here can deliver it. The water character is what sets the skill bar firmly at intermediate to advanced. Strong tidal currents run along this part of Goeree-Overflakkee, and the stretch between beach-posts 7 and 9 is particularly technical — breakwaters interrupt the flow in ways that create unpredictable water movement. The groins jutting out into the sea generate strong rip currents that can carry you downwind quickly and push you toward structure if you are not watching. Beginners looking for a confidence-builder should find a calmer beach first. If you have the experience to read water movement and manage a current, Ouddorp offers a genuine North Sea session on a beach with real character. The long shoreline gives you drift room, which counts when the tide is running. Keep launches and landings well clear of beach-posts 7 to 9 and the groins, pick a clean stretch, and the riding is worth the drive. For after the session, the village covers the essentials. Restaurants include 't Schouwtje, Akershoek, Eetwinkel 't Hoekje, Eterij De Ring, Grill & More, and In de Keulse Pot. De Bonte Koe handles the bar side.
