Calicoan Island sits at the southeastern tail of Samar in the Eastern Visayas, a Pacific-facing island that catches the full force of the Amihan trade wind during the northeast monsoon. ABCD Beach — the island's main strip of white sand — faces roughly ESE, which puts the Amihan cross-onshore from the right. That angle gives you lift and room to work upwind, but keep in mind that open Pacific is downwind of you. Getting here takes commitment. Guiuan town on mainland Eastern Samar is your base, reachable from Tacloban by bus. From Guiuan, Calicoan Island and ABCD Beach are accessible by local transport — ask in town for the current crossing option, as it can vary. The beach is well-known enough locally that any driver will point you straight there. Once you arrive, the setup is genuinely convenient for kiters: accommodation sits right on the sand. With the shore facing ESE at around 110°, the Amihan tends cross-onshore — solid for generating power and working upwind. The usable kite window spans 20° through 200°, which covers the core Amihan direction well. On the day, the exact angle matters: a more northerly shift gives a crisper cross-shore angle, while an easterly push brings the wind closer to onshore. Check conditions at the beach before you rig. This is a surf spot first, and the kite community shares the water with surfers. That shared setup demands situational awareness — launch timing, positioning, and right-of-way with surfers are non-negotiable. The beach can see real swell during the Amihan season given its Pacific exposure, which adds both excitement and complexity. Intermediates comfortable riding in waves and choppy water will likely find the conditions engaging. Beginners should weigh the wave exposure and shared water carefully before committing. Water character is consistent with open Pacific coast: wind chop stacking over an underlying swell, with wave-face riding possible on the right days. It is not a flat-water lagoon. Know how to body-drag upwind and self-rescue before you get on the water here — with open ocean to leeward, solid downwind safety skills are essential. Stay firmly within the November–March Amihan window. Eastern Samar sits in a high typhoon-exposure zone and conditions outside the trade wind season can deteriorate seriously.
