Currimao Beach stretches along the west-facing coastline of Ilocos Norte in the northern Philippines, where the South China Sea runs wide and the land lies flat behind a long sandy shore. It's a quieter corner of a region better known for heritage towns and tobacco fields than kite gear — but the wind exposure here is real, and the spot has a relaxed, unhurried feel that suits a longer stay. Getting there from Laoag, the regional hub with a domestic airport, is a straightforward coastal drive. The beach is accessible, parking is informal and close to the water, and there's no steep entry fee or resort gate to navigate. The Ilocos coast has that low-key character throughout. The beach itself is sandy, with reef sections present further from shore. Look for the flat water patches closer to the launch — they're real, and they make Currimao a reasonable pick for beginners or anyone focused on technique over tricks. The shore faces due west, which sets the geometry up well for the dominant seasonal winds pushing up this coast. The main kite window runs during the Habagat season, roughly June through October. Southwest winds arrive from a side-south angle on this west-facing beach — manageable, with enough onshore component to give you a clean sheet of water without making the launch awkward. The usable wind window runs from due south around through west to just past north, which is a generous arc for varied conditions. Between November and April, the Amihan — the northeast trade wind that powers most of the Philippine kite circuit on the opposite coast — can wrap around Luzon's northern tip and deliver some rideable sessions here, though it's more intermittent than the summer Habagat and not something to build a trip around without checking conditions first. On the water, the reef sections mean you want to scout your run before committing to a launch. The sandy bottom patches are the safe zones; booties are a reasonable call for anyone spending time in the shallower reef areas. Self-launching is workable on the sandy sections, but an unfamiliar beach always goes better with a second pair of hands. Facilities in the area cover the basics well.
