About Comporta

Comporta sits on the Alentejo coast, a long open Atlantic beach backed by pine forest with the kind of uncrowded, raw character that is genuinely rare in western Europe. The village is small, the area has leaned into low-key eco-tourism rather than resort development, and that keeps the beach wide, clean, and quiet even at the height of summer. The beach itself is generous: soft sand, no rocks, and a long stretch that gives you room to rig and walk your kite down without negotiating obstacles. Carvalhal beach, about 3 km to the south, is a natural extension and worth the walk or drive if you want to spread out further. The wind is the Nortada — the northern thermal that charges the Portuguese Atlantic coast from May through September. It arrives from the N/NNW direction and hits the beach side-onshore, which is the angle you want: if something goes wrong you have beach to land on rather than open ocean behind you. When it is on, expect it to build through the late morning and hold into the afternoon, typically running 18–25 knots. The water is Atlantic in character: 1–2 metre swell with wave faces running through, powered-up ocean chop rather than a sheltered lagoon. This is where Comporta earns its advanced-kiter reputation. The side-onshore angle opens up wave riding along the break, and the beach length lets you work upwind, but you need to be comfortable managing a kite in building, gusty conditions with real water underneath you. A flat-water progression spot this is not. Facilities on the beach itself are minimal — there is no kite school, no gear rental, no rescue service waiting around the corner. Bring what you need, know how to self-rescue, and treat this as a self-sufficient session. For food and drink, the village area has you covered: restaurants including A Cegonha, Almo Comporta, Cavalariça, Boca Boa Comporta, and Comporta Flavours handle the eating side well, with A Lareira, AlmaLusa, and Café do Talho for coffee or lighter stops. If you are staying, AlmaLusa Comporta and Casa Idalia Comporta are the accommodation options in the area. The window to target is May through September when the Nortada is consistent. Outside those months the wind becomes unreliable and the Atlantic gets less cooperative — not somewhere to take a gamble on a shoulder-season trip for kiting specifically. Brought correctly, Comporta delivers a wave session in genuine wilderness. Brought under-prepared, it will remind you why the research note says advanced kiters preferred.
