About Tróia

Tróia sits at the northern tip of a long sandy Atlantic peninsula wedged between Setúbal and Comporta on Portugal's western coast. Getting here sets the tone: the most direct route is a 30-minute ferry crossing from Setúbal, slicing across the Sado estuary where dolphins are a genuine sighting rather than a marketing line. You can also reach the peninsula by road from the south, via Comporta, if you're approaching from that direction. The kite beach faces west, open to the Atlantic. In summer, the Nortada — Portugal's characteristic coastal thermal wind — delivers cross-onshore conditions and typically runs at 18 to 26 knots, the kind of consistent afternoon window that makes session planning straightforward. The usable kite arc spans 195° to 345°, so the wind angle keeps you working cross-shore rather than getting pushed straight out to sea, which is exactly what you want on an Atlantic coast spot. The headline feature is the beach itself: over 30 kilometres of largely undeveloped Atlantic sand running south from the resort. A strong Nortada day here is a proper downwind run. Most riders set up at the northern end, near the Tróia resort complex, and work their way south with the wind — which means logistics matter before you launch. Arrange a car shuttle or a lift back, or you'll be hiking a very long way through sand in kite boots. Water character is open Atlantic — swell, chop, and current near the estuary mouth at the northern tip. This is not a flat lagoon. The cross-onshore Nortada angle makes water relaunches manageable on most days, but the spot asks for real awareness. Intermediates comfortable in open ocean conditions will feel at home; beginners should pick genuinely light days and stay clear of the estuary channel where currents run stronger than they look. Facilities are clustered at the northern resort end.
