About Nahoon Beach

Nahoon Beach sits where the Nahoon River spills into the Indian Ocean on the edge of East London — an east-facing stretch of coastline that turns Northeast and East winds into side-onshore conditions from October through March. It's one of the more versatile setups on the Eastern Cape: the river mouth delivers clean flat water for those who want to work on tricks or just cruise without fighting chop, while the open ocean beyond the mouth offers proper wave riding when swell lines up. The season wind runs 22–28 knots from the NE to E quarter. With an east-facing beach, that angle sits almost perfectly across the shore — clean power, predictable direction, enough room to work without getting driven down the beach. The usable wind window spans 0°–180°, which means the spot handles a solid range of directions before things get complicated. Nahoon is a well-known suburban beach within East London, easy to find and reliably signposted. Parking is available at the beach, though summer weekends fill the lot early. The East London Surf Lifesaving Club has a presence here, which means there are generally eyes on the water — worth noting on bigger days. The river mouth is your natural launch zone for flat-water sessions. The entry is gradual and depth manageable, but river mouths shift: sandbanks move seasonally, so scout conditions on arrival rather than assuming last month's layout holds. When swell is running, experienced riders can push out past the mouth for wave riding, but that combination of swell, current, and kite requires solid water-reading skills. This spot rewards intermediates and up. The NE/E winds carry real punch at their upper end, and wave conditions offshore add complexity that beginners don't need. In the river mouth on a moderate day with an instructor, a competent beginner can manage — but this is not a learn-to-kite beach. For food after a session, Just Fish and Guido's are local sit-down options; Baddy's Stakehouse and Catering On The Move cover the casual end. East London Surf Lifesaving Club also has a bar and café on site — convenient if you don't want to go far. Accommodation options cluster nearby: Nahoon Camp Site and Nahoon Eco Lodge put you closest to the water, while Blue Lagoon and Ebenhaeser provide alternatives a short drive away. The Eastern Cape doesn't carry the same marketing noise as the Cape Peninsula, and that's part of the appeal. Nahoon runs quieter, the crowd is local and knowledgeable, and on a clean NE morning with the river mouth glassing off, it can be genuinely excellent.
