Arinaga sits on Gran Canaria's southeast coast, just south of the town of Agüimes — a sandy beach with a small harbour breakwater at its southern end that sets it apart from the more exposed spots on this stretch of coastline. It's the quieter, more sheltered alternative to spots further along the east coast, drawing kiters who want reliable Alisio trade wind without maximum exposure. The NE trade wind — the Alisio — arrives side-onshore here, tracking within the 0°–180° arc that gives you a clean, safe window. From April through September it typically runs in the 15–25 knot range on solid days; the season stretches to October as the trades ease. The breakwater and harbour create a degree of natural shelter, so the chop near the launch area is generally more manageable than at fully exposed east-coast spots. The bottom is flat and sandy near the harbour, which makes entry and exit straightforward and reduces the consequences of a messy landing. Launch is off the sand, and the flat sandy bottom gives you room to get your lines sorted without nasty surprises underfoot. Gran Canaria Wingfoil Academy operates in the area, which says something about the site's suitability for those still building skills. That said, the spot reads as intermediate to advanced territory. The Alisio is a consistent, powerful trade wind, and when it's properly on, the exposed sections of the beach get lively. You need to be aware of the harbour infrastructure — the breakwater and any moored vessels — and plan your launches and landings accordingly. Water character shifts as you move away from the harbour: flatter and more predictable close in, more open-ocean choppy further offshore. Freeriders and those working on flat-water technique will be comfortable near the harbour zone; riders who want more progressive conditions can push out into the open fetch. Post-session, the village delivers. Bar La Universidad Arinaga, La Vaqueria, Ohasis Gastrobar Playa, and Restaurante El Salón de la Sal are all within reach of the beach. For a bed, Arinaga Beach, Hotel Playa de Arinaga, and Camping Playa de Vargas cover the range from hotel to campsite; Jacio House and Outer Reef Gran Canaria add a couple more options if those are full. April to October is the window, with the Alisio core running April through September at 15–25 knots. It's not the flashiest destination on Gran Canaria, but it's honest: consistent trade wind, a manageable beach launch, and enough local infrastructure to support a proper kite trip.
