Salinas Tenefé sits on Gran Canaria's south-east coast, tucked right alongside the legendary Pozo Izquierdo windsurf arena. The spot faces east, which puts the NE trade wind arriving side-onshore — one of the more honest angles you can ask for on a kite. In summer the trade kicks in reliably, pushing 20 to 35+ knots across the water. With around 315 wind days per year, this is no occasional fluke. The usable kite window runs from dead north through to due south (0°–180°), giving you a wide arc to work with once you're off the beach. The SE coastal road brings you in without drama, and you'll spot the Pozo Izquierdo area from a distance — the cluster of kite and windsurf rigs on a good day is unmissable. On peak summer weekends it draws a crowd, so arrive early if you want space to rig without chaos. The entry is the part that earns this spot its advanced-only reputation: it's rocky. There's no gentle sandy wade-in. You need to pick your line carefully, time the water, and commit cleanly. If you're still shaky on self-rescue or your body-drag is unreliable, this is not the place to work on that — come back when those fundamentals are solid. Once you're off the rocks, the riding opens up. The side-onshore trade gives you consistent, honest wind with room to generate speed and work the water. Expect chop on the stronger days — Gran Canaria's SE coast offers little shelter, and a full trade day here is a fast, physical session. The downwind hazard is the one to fix in your head before you ever rig up: cliffs lie downwind of the spot. Don't drift. Stay upwind-biased throughout your session, and if things go wrong, don't let yourself wash further downwind looking for a clear exit. Riders who read the water and manage their position confidently will be fine here; anyone who relies on a chase boat to feel safe should look elsewhere. Facilities in the area are solid for a working coastal spot. Restaurante Terraza El Viento and El Arenal Gastrobar are both nearby for food after a session, with Aloha and Cutre offering further dining options. Bar Pozo and Punta Tenefe cover the cold drink and coffee angle. Not a resort, but not remote either. Summer is the prime window when the NE trade is at its most consistent and powerful. The near-315-day wind count does suggest shoulder months are worth investigating if your schedule is flexible.
