The Golf de Roses is a wide bay on Catalonia's Costa Brava, open to the southeast and backed by the foothills of the Pyrenees to the north. Empuriabrava, near the historic town of Castelló d'Empúries, sits along the northern shore, and the kite beach runs along the bay's ESE-facing coastline with a long, clear fetch across the water. The spot is well-established and organised. Three officially marked kite zones keep riders separated from swimmers along the beach. The logistical detail to get right before you book: those zones are closed to kiting from June 1 through September 30 to protect beach users during peak season. This makes Empuriabrava a shoulder-season destination — March through May and October are the windows that work, and they work well. Two very different winds define what riding here feels like. The Tramontana blows down from the northwest, funnelled through the Pyrenees. In winter it arrives hard — typically 25–30 knots — and it can make surprise visits in summer too. It's not a wind to take lightly; it builds quickly and carries real power. The Garbi is the other story: a thermal sea breeze from the southeast that dominates summer afternoons, typically running 15–25 knots. The Garbi is more predictable and more forgiving, which makes it the better introduction to the bay. The water inside the bay tends to be relatively flat and sheltered, which is part of why the spot suits all levels. In lighter Garbi conditions it's genuinely accessible for riders still building their skills. In a strong Tramontana the same stretch of water is a different place entirely and calls for solid experience. The broad usable wind arc — from 50° through 210° — means conditions can work across a good range of weather patterns. Facilities nearby are solid. For food and drinks after a session, 69 beach bar, Cal Midi, Ché Cafe, El Caliu, Emporium, Hong Kong Restaurant, and J.R. are all options along or near the beach. For accommodation, Camping Rubina Resort, Hotel Castell Blanc, and Hotel Port Salins by Pierre & Vacances serve riders making a longer stay of it. If you're planning a trip specifically to ride, target spring. March to May often delivers consistent Garbi days, open kite zones, and a beach that isn't crowded. October is another strong option — experienced riders in particular look forward to the first Tramontana pulses of the season. Arrive in July and you'll find a beautiful beach that won't let you launch.
