Tucked into the southern shore of the Bay of Roses on Spain's Costa Brava, Sant Pere Pescador sits roughly two hours north of Barcelona in a broad, sheltered arc of coastline that has become one of Catalonia's most-visited kite destinations. The village itself is quiet — a working agricultural and fishing settlement a few kilometres inland — but the beach at Can Martinet is a different world: a wide, flat expanse of sand with a 300-metre designated launching zone that keeps kites, swimmers and paddleboarders out of each other's way. Getting here is straightforward. The motorway runs the length of the Costa Brava and Sant Pere Pescador is well signed from the bay exits. Parking is available close to the beach access tracks; arrive early on summer weekends to secure a spot near the kite area. The wind that makes this place tick is the Llevant, a SE thermal that builds on warm spring and summer afternoons and typically delivers 12–20 knots across the bay, with gusts reaching 30. Because it arrives from the SE, it comes in side-onshore along the Can Martinet beach, giving you a comfortable launch angle and a clean return to shore if something goes wrong. The usable wind arc runs from 0° through to 180°, so anything from northerly through east to south works — it is the sector beyond that you need to respect. That means the Tramuntana — the powerful NW wind that funnels down from the Pyrenees — is a different story entirely. In Tramuntana conditions the beach becomes an offshore zone and riding is dangerous; the inland pull is strong and rescue distances grow quickly. Know the difference before you rig up, and ask at the schools if you are uncertain. When the Llevant is cooking, the bay offers a long, relatively flat ride with manageable chop. The gradual beach gradient makes water re-launches and body dragging back to shore less punishing than on steeper shorelines. That said, the afternoon gustiness means this spot suits intermediates and above — riders who can manage a sudden 30-knot gust without losing composure. Facilities around the beach are solid for a self-sufficient kite trip. Camping L'Amfora and Camping Sènia Riu both sit close to the action for multi-day stays. For food and drink there is a solid spread: Bar Lido and Can Manasses cover the post-session drinks, while Ca la Teresa, Can Trona, Ca la Gemma, El Caliu, Bar Cafeteria La Cantonada and els fogons canadal handle meals. Spring and early summer are the sweet spot. The Llevant season runs reliably through the warmer months, and May–June typically offers the best ratio of clean side-onshore conditions to beach crowds. July and August are windier on the calendar but the launching corridor fills up fast on weekends.
