Es Barcarès sits at the southern curve of the Bay of Pollensa, inside the Albufereta Nature Park on Mallorca's northern coastline. This is the island's only officially licensed kitesurf area — a designation worth grasping before you pack the car. IBANAT, the Balearic Islands' nature authority, administers and enforces the zone. Riding outside the designated boundary isn't tolerated, and the protected park status is part of what keeps the bay in the shape it's in. The bay itself is wide, shallow, and sheltered, which is exactly why it works so well as a teaching ground. The shore faces northwest (shore normal around 315°), and the open end of the bay catches winds across a generous arc — westerlies, northwesterlies, northerlies, northeasterlies, and easterlies all produce usable sessions here. The wind arc covers roughly 225° (southwest) to 45° (northeast), which aligns with most of what the northern Mallorcan coast generates. When the wind funnels into the bay cleanly, the shallow teaching zone delivers flat to lightly choppy water — well-suited for learning and building confidence beyond the basics. Three established schools operate on the beach: Daniel's & Gerhard's VDWS Kitesurfing Center, Mallorca Kiteboarding (VDWS Approved Center), and kitesurfing club Mallorca (Asociación Aprende a Navegar). Expect an organised launch zone with instructors, rental kit, and school sessions running throughout the season. For solo intermediate and advanced riders, the school traffic in the near-shore zone means you'll want to work upwind into cleaner water once you're comfortable — the bay has space for it. The non-negotiable planning constraint: Es Barcarès closes completely from March 1 through June 30 for bird nesting season. IBANAT enforces this without exceptions, and the nature park status means there are no workarounds. Your window is July through February. Showing up in April expecting to ride is not going to go well. Getting to the beach is straightforward. Port de Pollença is well connected to Palma and accessible by road; Es Barcarès is a short drive south from the town centre with parking close to the beach access point. The area around Pollensa Bay is properly set up for a multi-day stay. For accommodation, Es Barcares and Hotel Illa d'Or are both nearby options. On the food side, the area around Port de Pollença has Ca'n Pescador, La Llonja Restaurant, Liberty Kitchen Restaurant, and Cafeteria Ca Les Monges — plenty of choice after a session. The overall infrastructure is solid for a spot this well established, and the combination of multiple schools, flat-water teaching zones, and a legitimate licensed status makes Es Barcarès the default answer for anyone asking where to kite on Mallorca.
