About Xàbia · El Grau

El Grau is Xàbia's working harbour beach on the Costa Blanca, tucked into a northeast-facing bay with Cabo de San Antonio acting as a natural breakwater to the southeast. That headland is the reason this spot works: it channels and focuses the Gregal — the local northeast wind — straight onshore across the bay, giving you a consistent and manageable breeze through the summer months. Getting here is straightforward. El Grau sits at the foot of Xàbia's port district, distinct from the old town a few kilometres inland and from Playa Arenal to the south. Head for the waterfront road along the harbour edge; parking along the beachfront is available and you can typically get a space outside peak summer weekends if you arrive early. The launch area is the sandy beach beside the port — sand bottom all the way in, which makes waterstarting and body-dragging in the shallows more forgiving than rocky alternatives nearby. The water character here is flat to light-chop. The bay's orientation and the shelter from the cape keep things tidy on Gregal days, and when the Levante — an easterly — fills in, it adds a touch more texture but nothing alarming. For intermediate kiters this is exactly what you want: consistent power, manageable conditions underfoot, and room to work on your riding without dramatic overpowering gusts. It is not a spot for complete beginners, however. The port channel runs close to the beach and demands constant awareness of your downwind position. Stay well clear of the harbour entrance and the boat traffic that uses it. The prime season runs May through September, when thermal activity builds reliably through the afternoon. The Gregal typically delivers in the 12 to 18-knot range during the peak summer period — enough to get moving on most twin-tips without overdressing on kite. Outside summer, frontal systems can push east-to-northeast winds through, but conditions become patchier and less predictable; this is primarily a warm-weather spot. After your session, El Grau has a solid stretch of places to eat and drink along the seafront. Bar Imperial and L'Aigua are good for a post-kite drink, and La fabbrica della pizza is a straightforward call for a proper meal. For something more local, Jardín and La Siesta are worth a look; Evo Mercat and La Maestrança are also on the strip. Lancashire Bruja adds a different flavour to the waterfront, Casa Song rounds out the restaurant options if you want to mix it up, and McDonald's is close if you need a quick refuel. El Grau is not the most glamorous kitesurf destination on the Costa Blanca, but it delivers where it counts: predictable summer thermals, flat water, a forgiving sand bottom, and easy access from a proper beachfront. Bring your intermediate A-game, keep a constant eye on the port traffic, and you will come away satisfied.
