Los Nietos sits on the southern shore of the Mar Menor, the large saltwater lagoon on the Murcia coast. The lagoon does most of the heavy lifting here: enclosed from the open Mediterranean by a narrow barrier strip, it stays flat and shallow regardless of what the wind is doing — which is exactly why this stretch draws beginners looking for forgiving conditions. The spot is near Los Alcázares, on the inner lagoon-facing shoreline. The beach faces northeast into the lagoon, which means a NE wind comes in cleanly onshore, pushing you toward the water and giving you plenty of room to work with. The usable wind arc runs from NNW through north, northeast, east, and on to ESE — a wide range of directions, all sharing a northerly or easterly component. Summer afternoons are when Los Nietos earns its reputation. Thermal winds build as the land heats up and typically fill in during the afternoon hours, delivering a reliable daily window through the warmer months. Outside of that thermal cycle the wind can be lighter and patchier, so timing your session matters. The water is the real selling point. The Mar Menor is genuinely shallow and its enclosed nature keeps chop minimal. There is little swell to speak of and no meaningful current to worry about. The flat surface lets you focus on technique rather than staying upright — if you are working through your first water starts or body drags, this kind of forgiving environment is hard to beat. That said, summer brings jellyfish nets to some beaches along the Mar Menor shore. They can affect where you launch and ride, so check locally before you set up and plan your entry and exit accordingly. The approach is straightforward. Los Nietos is a small coastal village accessible by road from Los Alcázares, sitting right on the lagoon shore. Parking near the beach is generally available, though summer weekends pull in crowds and an early arrival saves hassle. On the beach itself, scan for swimmers and other users before you pump up — the beach gets busy in peak season. No facilities are listed at this spot, so come self-sufficient: water, sun protection, and everything else sorted before you leave the car. For gear, the flat shallow conditions are sympathetic to slightly larger kites than you might fly at a choppier venue, but check the actual wind on the day — thermals can build and drop with some speed, and what looked solid an hour ago can ease off faster than you expect.
