Mejillones — more widely known by its nickname Popcorn Beach — sits on Fuerteventura's raw north shore, a short distance east of the better-known Majanicho. The Canary Islands' north coast takes the full brunt of the Atlantic here, and Mejillones amplifies that: this spot picks up larger swells than its western neighbour, and the reef beneath it is steep and fast. It is an expert-only venue, full stop. Getting here means navigating the volcanic north coast tracks typical of this end of the island. There is no resort infrastructure nearby — parking is rough and informal, as you would expect anywhere along this stretch. The "beach" is a lava shoreline, so bring solid footwear for the entry. There is no sand to walk out on, no gentle slope into the water. You step into the Atlantic over rock. The NE trade wind, the engine of Fuerteventura kitesurfing, comes in side-offshore at Mejillones. That puts the kite over land for the first metres of the ride and demands a clear-headed approach — if something goes wrong at launch, you are drifting out, not toward the beach. The usable wind window runs from roughly west-southwest through northwest to northeast (265°–45°), which in practice means the trade is usable but needs respect. Light wind days carry extra risk here precisely because the side-offshore angle gives you no safety margin. The waves are the whole point. Mejillones breaks fast over the reef with a steepness that rewards riders who know exactly where they are in relation to the lip. It is not a forgiving playground. The Atlantic swells arrive with more size and power than at Majanicho, and the reef below is not something to test with a soft edge approach. Wave-riding skills, a solid kite-body-drag in white water, and a reliable self-rescue are table-stakes before getting in the water here. The payoff for riders who belong here is a raw, high-performance wave session in a setting that has not been packaged for tourism. The north shore feels remote even when it is not; on a good swell day with the trade filling in, Popcorn Beach delivers waves that most kitesurfers never access. For a post-session drink or to check conditions before heading out, Café Bar El Perdido is the local option in the area. Expect honest Canarian bar fare rather than a kite school café — appropriate given the crowd this spot draws. Beginners and intermediates should give Mejillones a wide berth and head to one of the island's many more forgiving spots. If you have to ask whether this spot is for you, the answer is probably not yet.
