Playa de l'Ahuir sits on the Mediterranean coast just south of Gandía, roughly 70 kilometres south of Valencia. The beach faces east, backed by a natural dune system that gives it a wilder, less developed feel than the resort strips further up the coast. That eastward exposure is the whole point. The usable wind arc runs from 20° through to 160°, covering the full eastern quadrant of the compass. The dominant driver here is the Garbí, the SE thermal wind that builds over the land during the warmer months and pushes almost perfectly onshore. From May through September, expect afternoon thermals that switch on after midday and run through the late afternoon as the coastal plain heats up. It's the kind of pattern that rewards arriving early, rigging in the calm, and waiting for conditions to mature rather than chasing a session from scratch. Getting there is simple from Gandía town centre or the coastal road heading south. The beach is signposted and there's parking near the access point. The dune-backed approach means a short carry across sand, but the beach itself is wide and generous, giving you room to rig and lay out lines without crowding into other beachgoers. The dune line also offers some natural shelter while you set up. Water character here is typically flat to choppy inshore, with the open eastern fetch building short, steep chop when the thermal fully develops. This isn't a surf destination — the Mediterranean doesn't have the swell for that — but the fast, technical water suits freeride and freestyle sessions well. Flat-water tricks and powered carves are the dominant riding style. Skill level: the consistent thermal pattern and manageable water make this a reasonable spot for intermediates building their riding. That said, onshore conditions are unforgiving of weak self-rescue skills — solid water relaunches are essential before committing here. Thermals can build quickly through the afternoon, so be honest about your kite choice and don't let early light conditions tempt you into oversize gear. Foot traffic builds on summer weekends, particularly mid-morning. Weekday sessions or early-morning arrivals typically give you a cleaner beach to work with. The wide, natural beach means you can usually find a gap even on a busy afternoon. After your session, you're well catered for in the area. Bar El Gordo, Bar Palau, Bar la Plaça, La Villa, Del poble, and El Brasero all cover post-session food, while Cafenet, La Moreria, and Antiu Xixona handle coffee and snacks. There's also a Burger King nearby for the no-fuss option. For the most reliable Garbí thermals, plan your trip for May through September, with June through August typically the most consistent window. Outside this period, sessions depend more on synoptic weather systems moving through the western Mediterranean.
