Port de la Selva sits at the northern end of Costa Brava, tucked into a northeast-facing bay just north of Cap de Creus — the jagged headland where the Pyrenees finally drop into the Mediterranean. The village is small, compact, and serious about wind: this is one of the most exposed kite spots on the Spanish mainland, and it earns that reputation honestly. The wind here is defined by the Tramuntana, a powerful northwesterly-to-northerly that pours off the Pyrenees massif and funnels straight into this bay. When it blows properly — and from November through April it can blow very properly, with gusts reaching 30–50 knots — Port de la Selva transforms into a high-performance wave-kiting arena. The bay's long fetch lets the sea build, and 3-metre swell is not unusual during strong Tramuntana events. This is not a spot for anyone still figuring out water relaunches. In summer the wind shifts to a lighter east-northeast pattern, still within the usable 0°–180° arc but considerably more forgiving. Sessions are gentler, the crowds thin, and the water has the clear turquoise character you'd expect from this stretch of Costa Brava. It's still a technical spot — the bay has character — but summer is the window where experienced intermediates might begin to explore here, with appropriate caution. Getting to Port de la Selva means navigating the winding coastal road through the Cap de Creus Natural Park. The village itself is small enough to walk in ten minutes; parking can be tight in summer, so arriving early helps. The launch is from the town beach, but be aware there is a no-sail zone in the bay — you'll need to work outside its boundary. Read the local notices or ask at a bar before you rig. Once out, the water character shifts with the day. Tramuntana sessions deliver choppy, often lumpy conditions with cross-shore to cross-onshore flow, and swell rolls in from the northeast with genuine size on stronger days. Wave riding is the main event here — this is one of the few Mediterranean spots where the conditions can approach Atlantic quality during a hard Tramuntana blow. Anyone expecting flat water will need to recalibrate fast. Facilities in the village are village-scale but genuinely warm. Bar Cal Sereno, Bar Gus, and El Pescador are the local bar options for a post-session drink. For food, Brisa, Bar Platja, El café de la marina, el Celler, Hostal l'Arola, La Tina, and La Timba Pizzeria all sit within the village. It's a real local community, not a kite resort — gear up and sort your kit before you arrive. The honest summary: Port de la Selva rewards experienced wave-kiters, particularly in the November-to-April Tramuntana season. Summer brings lighter, more approachable winds but the spot retains its technical character. Respect the no-sail zone, give the Tramuntana the seriousness it deserves, and this bay will deliver.
