About Porto de Bares

Porto de Bares sits at the northernmost tip of Galicia, where the Atlantic coast turns the corner between the Cantabrian Sea and the open ocean. The bay here is sheltered enough to produce some of the flattest water on this stretch of coast, making it a practical choice for anyone who'd rather work on freestyle tricks than battle chop. Getting there, you'll be heading to a small fishing village — the kind of place where the harbor wall has been doing its job for generations. Access is along coastal roads that narrow as you get closer to the point; give yourself extra time and drive carefully. Parking is near the waterfront, which keeps the walk to the water short. The launch area sits in the sheltered bay behind the harbor wall. That wall does real work: it cuts the swell and keeps the water flat even when the Atlantic is difficult outside. The shore normal runs roughly SSE into the bay, which means the main NE wind comes in cross-onshore — solid for a controlled water start and a sensible exit if something goes wrong. The usable kite window runs 80° to 220°, covering NE through S and into SW. NE is the primary wind direction, and it delivers cross-onshore conditions with flat water that will suit intermediate and freestyle riders well. The protected setup behind the harbor takes the guesswork out of launching and gives you a forgiving riding area to get settled before pushing further out. When the wind swings to the W or SW, you're looking at more of a cruising session — those directions can be more relaxed, but check conditions carefully before committing on a westerly day, as offshore directions require more caution. From the water you get views of Illa Coelleira, a small island sitting offshore that gives the spot a distinctive character. Summer is the peak season here, when wind reliability is highest and the days are long enough to make the most of whatever conditions show up. Facilities in the village are simple. A Muller Mariña and O Centro are both restaurants within reach — useful for a post-session meal in a place this size. There is no dedicated kite school or gear shop, so come self-sufficient: bring your own equipment, spares, and a plan. If you need a pump or a specific bar connector, you brought it from home. This is a spot that rewards forward planning. The sheltered bay and cross-onshore NE wind make it a genuinely good freestyle venue when conditions align. It is not a beginner spot — the remoteness and lack of on-site support put it firmly in intermediate-to-advanced territory — but for a rider who can self-manage, Porto de Bares offers something distinctive: a calm, flat-water pocket at the dramatic northern edge of Galicia.
