Playa da Frouxeira sits on the exposed Atlantic coast of Valdoviño, north of Ferrol in Galicia's A Coruña province. The beach is long and sandy, its shoreline pointing WNW into open ocean — and on Spain's northwestern shoulder, that exposure is the whole story. Uninterrupted Atlantic swell arrives with weight and consistency, the wind off the ocean carries real size, and the spot makes its character known quickly: this is expert territory, built for riders who want to work the air rather than cruise the flat. Valdoviño is a small coastal town, and the beach carries a feeling of genuine remoteness when you get there. The sand is wide enough for a considered setup once you find your strip, but summers bring crowds — the launch zone deserves real attention when the beach fills up, and space becomes a variable rather than a given. The usable kite window runs from 205° to 5°, covering a sweep from south-southwest counterclockwise through east and north to just past north. In practice, the critical distinction is northeast versus west-southwest. When the wind tracks northeast, it arrives at a slight offshore angle relative to the WNW shore — cleaning the wave faces, organising the swell, and producing the structured launch ramps that have made Frouxeira a destination for aerial riding. High jumps are the discipline this beach rewards: the slightly offshore angle pulls the lip clean and gives you genuine airtime to work with. Flip to westerly or south-westerly and the picture changes sharply. The onshore angle turns the break chaotic; you are still within the usable arc, but the riding quality drops and the water becomes considerably messier. The hazards here stack up and deserve straight talk. The rip current is persistent — it runs regardless of wind direction or tide state, and it will move you faster and further than expected if you come off the kite in the wrong spot. High tide changes the break geometry enough to close the spot down entirely; checking the tide table before you rig is part of the plan, not an optional extra. The swing between slightly-offshore NE and onshore W/SW also means conditions can shift character substantially over a few hours as a front moves through, so reading the session before it starts matters. For something after the water, O Coval restaurant is the nearby option — a useful place to debrief and warm up after a session on the Atlantic. Frouxeira rewards the riders who can read it. Come with solid water management, a real understanding of the rip, and an eye on the tide, and it can deliver aerial conditions that are hard to find elsewhere on this stretch of coast.
