About San Xurxo · Ferrol

San Xurxo — also called San Jorge — sits on the Atlantic-facing coast just outside Ferrol, in the far northwest corner of Spain's Galicia. The beach stretches for roughly 2.1 kilometres of dark sand that faces due west, fully open to Atlantic swell and the prevailing winds. There is no softening of conditions here: what the ocean sends, San Xurxo receives. The usable wind arc runs from 190° to 350°, covering south-southwest all the way through north. Northeasterlies arrive slightly offshore from the right, and on those days the beach delivers clean frontside wave riding — the kind that makes intermediate-to-advanced wave riders show up in numbers. Southwest winds are the more common winter pattern: cross from the left, paired with bigger and heavier Atlantic swell. Different riding, but for the right rider, equally compelling. Getting here from Ferrol is straightforward — the beach is well signposted and there is parking at the beach access. With 2.1 km of sand to work with, you will have room to set up without crowding other riders. Two rivers — the Esmelle and the Juncal — reach the coast in this stretch. Give their mouths a wide berth during launch and landing; current near river outflows can create problems if you are not paying attention. The water character is Atlantic in every sense: heavy swell, real power in the sets, and an ocean that does not make concessions. On a clean NE day the waves line up properly and you can work the frontside with confidence, reading sets as they come through with shape and rhythm. On a SW winter day the same beach transforms — bigger, more powerful, occasionally messy — and it earns its intermediate-advanced rating without question. If wave riding is new to you, this is not where you start. Self-rescue competence and solid kite control in swell are not optional here. The beach is wide enough to give you room to recover, but Atlantic conditions — particularly on the bigger southwest days — can combine in ways that demand real skills at short notice. Post-session, Casa Claudina is the local restaurant for a proper meal. Costa Verde Bar & Lounge handles drinks while you watch the Atlantic settle. Galicia's most consistent wind windows tend to run through autumn and winter, when the southwest patterns push through with regularity. Lighter, more variable conditions are possible in summer, but northeast days can produce excellent wave sessions at any point in the year — check the arc, check the swell forecast, and time it right.
