About Kappalady Lagoon

Kappalady Lagoon sits roughly 20 kilometres south of Kalpitiya along Sri Lanka's North Western Province coastline — the spot where kitesurfing first took root on the island back in 2005. That history shows in the infrastructure: multiple schools, dedicated camps, and a community of instructors who know this water intimately. The lagoon itself is the draw. Roughly 1.5 kilometres of waist-deep, flat water stretches out from a sandy shoreline with a shell-mixed bottom underfoot. The depth stays manageable across the full breadth, which makes self-rescue straightforward and learning progression natural. Outside the lagoon, reef waves kick up 100 to 200 metres from the launch — access to those is there if you want it, but the lagoon keeps beginners and intermediate riders well away from that energy. Wind arrives with the southwest monsoon from May through October, typically running 15 to 25 knots, side-onshore from the left. The direction sits cleanly within the usable window (195° to 15°), which means the wind carries you away from shore on your dominant tack. The enclosed water runs flatter than an open beach would. Getting here requires a drive up the Kalpitiya Peninsula — a narrow strip of land where the road in is essentially the road out. Local tuk-tuks and transfers from Kalpitiya town cover the roughly 20-kilometre stretch to the lagoon strip. Parking and launch access sit close together, so most riders gear up at their accommodation and walk straight to the water. On the water, the flat lagoon is genuinely beginner-friendly during settled SW monsoon conditions, and intermediates can work on freestyle without worrying about uneven chop. Advanced riders can push out toward the reef for wave sessions, though that section deserves respect — know the spot before you head out there. The shell-mixed sandy bottom is gentle underfoot, but reef shoes make a longer session more comfortable. Facilities are well-developed for such a remote stretch of coastline. Accommodation ranges from budget camping at Kite House Budget Campsite and Agro Village Kalpitiya to more comfortable options at Elements Beach & Nature Resort, Duotone Pro Center Kappaladi powered by Kitekuda, and Bedrock Beach Villas Kalpitiya. Lagoonies cafe and Reelif Beach Club & Café handle food and drinks without needing to leave the strip. Outside the May-to-October southwest monsoon window, conditions can be unreliable. Most riders plan their visit around peak season when the wind shows up consistently and the lagoon sits at its flattest.
