About Bwejuu

Bwejuu sits at the southern edge of Zanzibar's Michamvi Peninsula, a quiet fishing village on the island's southeast coast. The defining feature here is a shallow, sheltered lagoon that makes it one of the more accessible kitesurf spots on the island — suited to all levels and with enough space to spread out. Getting here means road transport from Stone Town or Zanzibar airport, typically by hired car or dalla-dalla heading south toward the southeast coast. Budget some time for the journey and for finding your feet in a village that runs at its own pace. The lagoon is what makes Bwejuu work. Shallow, flat, and protected from any serious ocean swell, it gives beginners a genuinely forgiving environment to practise in while still offering enough open water for experienced riders to put in quality sessions. At low tide the lagoon reveals more rideable area; high tide compresses things considerably. Checking local tide tables before you kit up is a habit worth building here. Wind runs on two monsoon cycles, both well-represented in the 20°–160° usable arc. The Kaskazi — the northeast monsoon — runs roughly from December through March, pushing from the northeast at side-onshore angles for this stretch of coast. The Kusi — the southeast monsoon — takes over from around May to October from the southeast, typically delivering stronger and more consistent conditions. The shoulder periods between monsoons can be light and variable; if reliable wind matters, aim for the core of either season. The sheltered lagoon tends to make conditions feel manageable even when the wind is on the stronger end. The water here is calm — flat and relatively shallow across the rideable area. That makes Bwejuu a practical choice for anyone building skills or returning to kiting after time off the water. When things don't go to plan, the consequences tend to stay recoverable.
