About Jambiani

Jambiani sits on the southeast coast of Unguja — Zanzibar's main island — facing directly east into the Indian Ocean. The beach is long, and its headline feature for kiters is a 2 km sandbank lagoon that runs parallel to the shore. That lagoon is what defines a session here. At low tide it's flat, shallow, and manageable — exactly the kind of water that helps you build upwind control or put in mileage without fighting swells. At high tide the situation shifts completely: the lagoon fills, and reef waves become the main feature. Two very different sessions, same spot, same tide cycle. The practical upshot is that you need to know where you are in the tidal cycle before you rig. Low tide is the accessible entry point; high tide is for riders who are comfortable in wave conditions. Jambiani gets wind from two distinct seasonal patterns. The Kusi blows out of the southeast from June through September. The Kaskazi arrives from the northeast between December and March. Both sit within the spot's usable kite window — 20° through 160° — which means the prevailing easterly quadrant winds of both seasons put you squarely in arc. The result is a spot with two real wind seasons per year rather than one, which makes it worth planning around. The east-facing beach and predominantly easterly wind direction across both seasons mean you'll typically launch with a side-to-side-onshore angle. That's generally workable, but the actual wind direction on the day and where you are in the tidal cycle are still worth reading carefully before you go out.
