About Mafia Island

Mafia Island sits roughly 130 kilometres south of Dar es Salaam in the Indian Ocean, part of Tanzania's Pwani Region. Getting here takes real commitment — a light aircraft from Dar or a boat crossing through open channel water — and that friction is exactly what keeps the crowds away. What you find on arrival is unspoiled Indian Ocean kiting at its most honest. The island's kite season runs June through September, when the Kusi, the regional Southeast trade wind, arrives and delivers consistent 15 to 25 knots across the channel. With the usable kite window running from north through south (0°–180°), the SE direction sits right in the rideable arc. Conditions during peak Kusi are typically clean and steady — the kind of wind that rewards the effort of getting here. Kiting takes place around the main island and extends to the nearby Songa Songa and Fangove islets, where the water shifts between shallow tidal lagoons over coral and the deeper blue of open ocean beyond. The reef is what makes this place beautiful and what demands respect in equal measure. Coral at varying depths means reading the tide and the bottom before you set up is not optional. Intermediate to expert is the honest skill bracket — not because the wind is violent, but because the environment punishes inattention. Whale shark encounters are part of Mafia's identity. The island sits within a protected marine park, and these enormous filter feeders are a known presence during the season. For most riders it is an unforgettable moment; just know they can appear with little warning and require a quick course adjustment. Facilities are minimal by design. Mafia runs on dive tourism and community fishing — there is no purpose-built kite infrastructure, no school, no rescue boat on standby. Self-sufficiency is the baseline: bring spare lines, a pump, a repair kit, and enough knowledge of your own gear to troubleshoot independently. If something breaks critically, a kite shop is a long way away. The boat crossing from the mainland can be rough when the Kusi is running. Flying in is the smoother option, though schedules are limited and the island operates on its own time. Build spare days into your itinerary. Mafia offers something increasingly rare: reliable seasonal wind, pristine coral water, whale sharks below the surface, and almost no other kiters in sight.
