About Khlong Dao Beach — Koh Lanta

Khlong Dao Beach sits on the northern end of Koh Lanta Yai, a long west-facing stretch of sand looking out over the Andaman Sea. The shore faces roughly west, which means when the northeast trades arrive between December and February they hit the water at a clean side-shore angle — the sweet spot for kite sessions here. Getting to Koh Lanta involves a ferry crossing from the mainland, then a drive up to the northern beach. The road to Khlong Dao is well-travelled and straightforward to find. The beach is long enough to give you options for where you set up, though a kite school operates here so expect some company during peak season weeks. The northeast trades that roll through December to February typically run in the 15–22 knot range — enough to keep intermediates comfortably powered on a mid-size kite and give beginners working with the school a real feel for the sport. The angle is side-shore, keeping the wind steady and the launch relatively clean. Behind the reef, the water flattens out into something workable without constant chop management — that sheltered inside stretch is where most riders make their runs. The flip side is the southwest monsoon. From roughly June through October, strong SW winds close this spot — conditions become unrideable for kitesurfing. The shoulder months of March to May and November can be light and transitional. December through February is when Khlong Dao delivers; plan your trip accordingly. A couple of hazards worth knowing before you launch: the reef that creates the flat water also defines your downwind limit — get a look at it before your first run. Khlong Dao is a popular general beach, so swimmers, paddle boarders, and beach-goers are a constant presence, especially through the late morning hours. An early start gets you cleaner water and more room. The beach strip has a reasonable spread of facilities. For food and drinks, Rock Beach Bar, Cocoloco by Southern Lanta, Let's Sea By The Water, Rak Lanta Restaurant, and El Greco - Greek Taverna are among the options nearby. On the accommodation side, Laguna Beach Club Resort, D.R. Lanta Bay Resort, Cicada Lanta Resort, Chada Lanta Beach, and the more budget-friendly Hey Beach Hostel cover a range of price points. The kite school presence means gear rental and lessons are available directly on the beach — useful if you are travelling light or want to try before you commit to shipping a quiver. Khlong Dao is not a hardcore wind-chasing destination. It is a beach holiday spot that also happens to offer solid kitesurfing during the northeast trade season. Come in December through February, size your kite for 15–22 knots, and you will have a session that justifies the ferry crossing.
