About Sairee Beach — Koh Tao

Sairee Beach runs along the western flank of Koh Tao, a small island in the Gulf of Thailand within Surat Thani province. The beach faces west, placing it squarely in the path of the southwest monsoon that builds across the Gulf from May through October — the main kiting window on this coast. Reaching Koh Tao means arriving by sea — ferry or speedboat from the mainland or surrounding islands. There's no road link to the island, so gear logistics need thinking through before you depart. On Koh Tao, Sairee is the main beach on the western shore, easy to reach from the pier on foot or by local transport. The kite zone sits in a sheltered bay with flat water — genuinely flat on most days, not just flat by comparison to open ocean. That surface rewards freeride carving, toeside practice, and early jump attempts without punishing landings. The essential local rule: launch and ride north of the dive boat moorings. Dive operations run actively along Sairee throughout the day, and drifting south through that corridor puts you in direct conflict with boats and divers. North of the moorings, the riding area opens up and is free of reef obstacles — more forgiving than many Thai spots where shallow reef cuts across the kite zone. During the southwest season, May through October, wind typically runs 15–25 knots from the southwest — side-shore for this west-facing beach, which keeps riders from being pushed directly offshore and makes drift manageable if you end up downwind. Consistency varies across the season; some windows deliver solid daily wind while others are patchier, so building flexibility into a trip here pays off more than committing to a fixed week. The flat bay and reef-free kite zone make this a reasonable spot to work on technique. Intermediates will find the conditions forgiving on a good wind day; beginners should get proper instruction before heading out solo, given the dive boat traffic and the open-water nature of an island spot. From December through April, the northeast monsoon governs the Gulf, but Koh Tao's west coast sits in its wind shadow. Conditions are typically calmer during this period and less suited to kiting, while dive tourism on the island peaks. The southwest season is the clear window. After a session, the beach strip covers the basics. Banyan Bar, Fishbowl, Blue Water Café & Restaurant, and Coco View Bar handle cold drinks. For food, Blue Sea, Famoso, 995 Roasted Duck, Cafe del Sol, and Cloud Nine By Two View all serve proper meals. Aow Leuk Resort 1 has café facilities on the beachfront as well.
