Thong Sala is the main port town on Koh Phangan, the Gulf of Thailand island best known for its Full Moon Parties but increasingly on the radar for kitesurfers working the island's exposed eastern and southeastern wind window. The beach sits right in front of town, which means access is as straightforward as it gets — you're not navigating a dirt track to a hidden break. Ferries from Surat Thani on the mainland and from Koh Samui land here, so getting your gear to the island is a well-worn routine rather than an expedition. The usable kite window runs from east-northeast through to south-southeast (67°–157°), with easterly and SE winds as the primary drivers. That orientation puts the wind broadly side-to-onshore depending on the exact direction — a more forgiving angle than a straight onshore beach where you're fighting turbulence off the shore break to relaunch. The Gulf of Thailand setting shapes the water character here. Expect flatter, warmer water than an ocean-facing break. The enclosed nature of the gulf tends to build short chop rather than long ocean swell, which can work in your favour if you're working on progression — linking runs and learning new moves without getting buckled by unpredictable lines. Before launching, check for vessel traffic and stay well clear of the pier and active ferry lanes. Drifting downwind toward a ferry approach is not a hazard you want to be managing mid-session. After the water, the beachfront and surrounding streets are well stocked.
