While Djerba's kitesurf scene draws most of its traffic to spots further along the coast, Fort El Kastil quietly earns a following among riders who'd rather have room to breathe than be part of a crowd. The approach is simple: head out from Houmt Souk toward the northwest coast and the fort itself is the landmark you're looking for. The launch area sits within Djerba's broader lagoon system, which means the water is characteristically flat — none of the short chop you'd get from an open ocean fetch. The usable wind window runs from 270° to 90°, covering westerly through northerly to easterly winds. In practice, the spot works best on N and NE wind, which arrives at a cross-shore angle — consistent power through the session without pushing you straight offshore. The shallow sandy bottom throughout the lagoon means a dropped kite or an unexpected swim isn't a crisis. Self-rescue is manageable here, and that reliability is a big part of why intermediate riders favour this spot over the busier alternatives on the island. Conditions are flat-water friendly, but this isn't really a first-week-ever spot. It suits intermediates who are comfortable rigging and launching independently and want the space to work on technique — upwind, transitions, or early trick attempts — without navigating other kites at every turn. You'll find noticeably fewer kites in the air here than at Smile Beach, so crossed lines and crowded launches are much less of a concern.
