The Kerkennah Islands sit in the Gulf of Gabès, a low-lying scatter of coral limestone about 25 kilometres east of Sfax. The northern shore is as raw as kitesurf spots come — no kite school, no beach bar with branded umbrellas, no crowds. Just wide, shallow water, a quiet coastline, and a consistent northerly that builds reliably through the warmer months. Getting here is part of the experience. A daily ferry makes the crossing from Sfax in around 50 minutes, keeping the spot reachable without making it a drive-up destination. That ferry ride acts as a natural filter — only riders who genuinely want to be here make the trip. Once on the island, you will need local transport to reach the northern coast, so plan that leg before you arrive rather than hoping something turns up. The northern shore catches the prevailing wind from the NNW, making it side-onshore and broadly manageable for confident riders. The usable wind window covers west through north to east, giving you real options depending on the day's direction. The sea is notably shallow here — a defining feature of the Gulf of Gabès coast — and that translates directly into the riding: no chop, no swell to deal with, just smooth flats stretching out in front of you. Freeriders and anyone hunting flat-water sessions will genuinely enjoy the conditions. The shallowness cuts both ways. Very shallow water throughout the riding area means you need to be comfortable launching, landing, and water-starting in minimal depth. This spot suits riders who already have solid flat-water skills and can manage a kite confidently without a safety net close by. Get that foundation in place and Kerkennah Nord is a genuinely liberating session. Wind consistency peaks from April through September. Outside that window reliability drops off markedly, so plan a dedicated trip within that range. Facilities on the islands are modest and local, which suits the character of the spot.
