About Foça Kite Beach

Foça sits on Turkey's northern Aegean coast in a wide, westward-opening bay built on the site of ancient Phocaea—roughly 70 kilometres north of İzmir. The beach sits right at the edge of the historic town, and access from İzmir is straightforward by road. Once you're there, parking is close to the waterfront and you're within easy reach of everything the town offers. The bay's geography is the main reason to come. When the Meltemi builds through the summer months, it arrives from the north as a side-shore wind, and the sheltered shape of the bay keeps the water flat in response. This is primarily a flat-water spot with shallow areas close to the shore—conditions that suit beginners getting comfortable with water starts and intermediates working on transitions. The usable kite window covers the 180° to 0° arc, meaning winds from the south through west to north are workable, and a northerly Meltemi sits cleanly in that window. Best season is May through August. Typical high-season wind sits in the 15–20 knot range—enough to get most riders comfortably powered on appropriate gear. The water is warm through the season, making long sessions easy to commit to and falling in a non-event. The bay's sheltered character keeps conditions manageable rather than gnarly. Launching from the beach puts the open westward bay ahead of you with good downwind space. Watch the shallows near the shoreline—they're forgiving for learning-level riding and wading, but worth knowing about if you're coming in fast or landing a kite downwind of the beach. Foça is not a built-out kite hub, so if you need instruction or gear rental, confirm availability locally before you arrive. The town itself rewards an evening's exploration. Foça has a working harbour and the layered history of ancient Phocaea still visible in the landscape around it. For accommodation close to the beach, options include Foca Kumsal Hotel, Foca Vertigo beach, Double CC woodcamp, Ayshe Pansiyon, and Limon Pansiyon. After sessions, the fish restaurant scene is strong: Foça Balık Evi, Fokai Balık Restoran, Foca Restaurant, Cadde lokantası, and Letafet are all local options. Foça is not a mainstream kite destination, which means fewer crowds and a more local atmosphere—a genuine flat-water stop with real history around the edges.
