About Urla (Gülbahçe)

Gülbahçe sits on the Gulf of Çarpan on the Çeşme peninsula, south-west of İzmir. It's the first kite spot you encounter driving south from the city along the peninsula, making it the natural first call for riders based in İzmir or passing through. Three launches share the gulf. The most straightforward is the kite-school beach on the south-west shore, where the prevailing north-to-northwest Meltemi arrives cross-shore. Clean entry and exit angles, flat water behind you, and typically an instructor or two on site during the season make this the default choice for visiting riders. Lessons run here through the season, making it a practical starting point if you're learning in this region. On the opposite side of the gulf, the east-bank beach is a quieter alternative — useful when the main spot gets crowded on peak summer weekends. The third option is a shallow sandbar headland to the north, which offers flat-water speed-run potential, but the wind goes offshore there. Ride it with someone who knows the spot well, or leave it for another day. The Meltemi is the engine here. It funnels from the north and northwest, pressing side-shore across the main beach and keeping the gulf surface flat. The enclosed shape of the gulf shelters the water from open-sea swell, so even when the Meltemi pushes hard, the surface stays manageable. When it's fully on, the water has that glassy, lake-like quality that makes enclosed Aegean spots worth the drive. High-season averages sit around 20 knots — productive across most kite sizes, and accessible for riders still building hours. Season runs April through August, with the Meltemi at its most consistent through the peak summer months. Skill level scales with which launch you pick. The south-west kite-school beach suits intermediates and above: cross-shore entry, flat water, instructors close by. The north sandbar raises the risk profile considerably — offshore drift there demands solid self-rescue and a good read of the wind direction before committing. Leave it for days when you're riding with someone experienced at this spot. After a session, Gülbahçe village has the post-water logistics sorted. Asmalı Cafe, Calipso, and Pusula handle full meals.
