About Gökçeada Eselek Beach

Gökçeada — historically known as Imbros — is an island in the northern Aegean, part of Çanakkale province in Turkey. Eselek Beach sits on the island's eastern shore and has earned a solid reputation as one of the region's more reliable wave-riding venues. The beach faces east, putting the prevailing North-Northeast wind side-onshore — the kind of angle that organises the launch zone and generates consistent cross-chop and proper wave faces out front. With more than 300 windy days per year, this isn't a spot you visit on a seasonal gamble; conditions are available across a wide stretch of the calendar. When the Meltemi is running strong, wave faces reach 1-2 metres. That makes Eselek a genuine wave venue rather than a flat-water playground. Intermediate riders comfortable in chop will manage well on moderate days; advanced riders will find proper wave-riding opportunities when the swell stands up. Complete beginners or anyone wanting to build technique without dealing with waves should head to Aydincik Beach, around 2 kilometres to the south, where the water is flat in the same wind. The usable wind window runs from North through to South (0°–180°), covering the full east-facing arc. North-Northeast — the classic Meltemi direction — sits well within that window. On moderate days the conditions are accessible; when the Meltemi really powers up, sizing down is the smart call. Getting to Gökçeada means taking a ferry from the mainland — the island sits off the Çanakkale coast. Once on the island, Eselek is reachable by road along the eastern shore. The launch itself is from a wave beach, so watch the shore break before committing to a session. A cross-onshore wave beach launch is manageable but requires confidence in your body drag and water-reading — not the place to test your self-rescue for the first time. The facility infrastructure is strong for a relatively remote island location. Multiple kite schools operate in the area: Angel Kite Surf, Aydın Kitesurf, Çağdaş Cafe Camping & Windsurf School, and Crazy Island Windsurf and Kite Center all cover instruction and likely gear hire. Accommodation options include Gökceada Sörf Oteli, Kotinos Beach Hotel, and Cinarli Kasri. After sessions, Kotinos Restaurant, Flamingo Cafe, and Fengari Restoran Kefalos are all on the island. The island itself is part of what makes this trip worthwhile. Gökçeada has a distinctive, unhurried character — clean Aegean water, open landscapes, and a pace that suits multi-day stays. It's not a purpose-built kite resort, and that's genuinely part of the appeal: real conditions at a real place, not a curated kite park.
