Muğla, Turkey
Remote 4.5 km barrier beach at Dalyan river mouth; only accessible by boat or 4x4. NW thermal 12-18 kn afternoon. SW-facing long stretch with no obstructions; caretta sea turtles nest here (early morning restricted May–Sep). Uncrowded, beginner-friendly flat water.
Iztuzu Beach sits at the mouth of the Dalyan River — a 4.5 km barrier beach separating the river delta from the open Mediterranean on Turkey's Aegean coast. Getting here is half the adventure. There's no simple road to the launch: you arrive by boat from Dalyan town or push through on a 4x4 track. That barrier to entry is exactly what keeps this place uncrowded. When you finally get there, you'll find a long, unobstructed SW-facing stretch of beach that's largely yours to work with. The water character depends on which side of the barrier you're on. The river-mouth side offers genuinely flat water — calm lagoon conditions with minimal chop, no boat traffic cutting through your riding lines, and a long fetch to build speed. It's this combination that makes Iztuzu a real beginner-friendly spot rather than just marketed as one. Wind is driven by NW thermals that build through the afternoon, typically running 12–18 knots. The usable kite window spans 135°–315°, which places the thermal direction comfortably within range. Mornings can be light; the practical session window is afternoon once the thermal has had time to establish. Don't rush the rigging. One constraint that matters: Iztuzu is one of the Mediterranean's most significant loggerhead sea turtle (caretta caretta) nesting beaches. From May through September, sections of the beach are restricted in early morning hours to protect nesting and hatchling activity. You'll need to check where the roped-off zones sit before choosing your launch point. Later morning into afternoon is the workable window during nesting season, and it aligns well with the thermal anyway. On-site, Iztuzu Beach Cafe and Muçev Turizm Kafe İztuzu cover food and drinks. İztuzu Bungalow & Camping is the closest overnight option for staying right at the beach. For more comfort, the boat back to Dalyan town opens up a wider range — Grenadine Lodge, Crescent Park Dalyan, Dalyan Resort Hotel, OASIS APART, and Portakal Hotel Dalyan all sit in town, along with Gölbaşi and Gölbaşı Restaurant for a proper meal. Because access is by boat or 4x4, there's no drive-up car park at the launch. Pack everything you need before you leave — board, bar, pump, sun cover — and factor travel time from Dalyan into your session plan. Boat services from town run regularly in season and take around 20–30 minutes each way. With 4.5 km of unobstructed beach, moderate afternoon thermals, and flat lagoon water, this is the kind of spot that's genuinely hard to find: uncrowded, calm, and honest about what it offers. If you can handle the logistics, the reward is a near-empty beach with reliable afternoon wind and room to actually learn or drill technique without interference.
