The prime season runs from June through September, with July and August typically offering the most consistent thermal winds. The Imbat breeze tends to build reliably during those months, making it the favoured window for most kiters visiting the area. Outside of summer, winds can become less predictable and the weather cooler.

The spot looks well suited to intermediate and advanced riders. The flat, shallow water inside the bay is approachable, but gusty patches near the headlands and quickly building afternoon thermals mean beginners should exercise caution and ideally ride with supervision or after completing a proper course. It can be challenging when the wind picks up unexpectedly.

The dominant summer wind is the Imbat, a thermally driven westerly that channels along the length of Gökova Bay. It typically arrives sideshore to side-onshore at the main beach areas, which is generally considered a safer orientation for launching and landing. Local topography can create variations, so observing conditions on arrival is recommended.

For the typical summer Imbat, a kite in the 9–12m range covers most conditions for an average-weight rider. On lighter days in early June or late September, a larger 12–14m may be useful. During peak July and August, when the thermal can build strongly in the afternoon, a smaller 9m or even 7m could be needed. Bringing a quiver if possible gives you the most flexibility.

Dalaman Airport is the nearest international gateway, sitting approximately 25 kilometres from Akyaka — a journey of around 30 minutes by road. Renting a car at the airport is the most practical option for getting around. Taxis and transfers are also available, though a car gives you more flexibility, especially for transporting kite equipment.

Yes, a few worth noting. The Azmak River outflow near the launch area creates reedy, uneven shoreline sections that need careful navigation when rigging and launching. Boat traffic increases significantly in summer, so always check the water before launching and stay aware of leisure craft in the bay. Gusty conditions can develop around the headlands, and afternoon thermals can build faster than expected.

The main launch area is generally located on the sandy beach sections near the Azmak River mouth. It is advisable to walk the shoreline before setting up to identify the clearest launch zone and avoid the reedy sections. Arriving a little early to scout the area and watch how other kiters are launching can save time and stress.

Akyaka has a good selection of local options within easy reach of the water. For food and drinks, Azmak Restaurant, Akyaka Kafetarya, Gülşah Restaurant, and Ayse Ana Ev Yemekleri offer Turkish cuisine, while Feron Beach Bar, Gordo Bar, Cycle Bar, and Çadır Cafe & Market are convenient for post-session drinks. The Caretta Hotel and ALA Otel are among the accommodation options in town.

Inside the bay, the water is generally relatively flat and shallow, which makes it a more forgiving environment compared to open ocean spots. This is particularly noticeable in the areas close to the river mouth and along the inner bay. On windier days the surface chop can increase, but it remains manageable for most intermediate riders.

It is not ideally recommended as a first-time learning spot without proper instruction. The summer thermals can build quickly and catch out inexperienced riders, and the reedy shoreline adds a layer of complexity to launching. If you are a beginner, seeking out a local instructor or school before getting on the water is strongly advisable.
