About Saros Bay / Erikli

Saros Bay sits in the northern corner of the Gulf of Saros, in Turkey's Thrace region — the European slice of the country, inside Edirne province roughly three hours west of Istanbul. The spot is accessed at the village of Erikli, where a long sandy beach faces north across the gulf. That north-facing orientation is the whole reason you come here: it puts the summer Meltemi directly onshore. The Meltemi runs from roughly mid-June through mid-September and typically delivers 18 to 30 knots out of the north, sweeping in cleanly off the water and pushing you back toward the beach if anything goes wrong. The usable kite window covers an arc from west (270°) around through north and east to 90°, which aligns neatly with the prevailing wind direction and keeps conditions honest. Entry is over shallow sand — the kind of setup that's forgiving for wading out and self-rescuing alike. Timing shapes the session more than anything else here. The morning window, before thermal cycles develop, tends to give the cleanest and most consistent wind. Afternoons can bring a lull as local thermals interact with the sea breeze, so if you're travelling specifically for the riding, aim to be on the water early. It's not a universal rule — conditions vary — but the morning is reliably the stronger bet. The beach itself is wide and sandy with plenty of room to rig without crowding your neighbours. The shallow entry is a genuine asset: it takes some of the stress out of launching solo, and it keeps things manageable if you're still building confidence in stronger winds. The gulf opens up into solid riding space once you're clear of the shallows, with the onshore wind direction doing the safety work for you. Facilities at Erikli are minimal — nothing is listed at the spot itself, so come fully equipped. Bring water, snacks, a repair kit, and whatever else your day demands. The absence of infrastructure is also part of the appeal: this is a quiet beach with room to breathe, a meaningful contrast to the busier and more commercialised kite spots further south along the Aegean. For riders who know Istanbul, it sits in reasonable day-trip range, though an overnight in the Gulf of Saros area gives you the flexibility to pick your morning window without rushing. Intermediate riders and above will find the Meltemi conditions straightforward to manage. The shallow, sandy entry and forgiving geography also make it workable for advancing beginners, provided they're self-sufficient — there's no kite school or rescue service on-site to rely on. Go in summer, go early, and you'll likely have the beach largely to yourself.
