Avon Ramp 38 sits on the Pamlico Sound side of Hatteras Island, one of the most well-known kite launches in the Outer Banks. The Sound here is a broad, shallow estuary running west from the barrier island, completely sheltered from Atlantic swell — flat water, predictable conditions, and room to work without fighting ocean chop. The launch is a ramp with parking right alongside it. It's one of the busiest kite spots in the OBX, which means there's usually someone around — good for beginners who want familiar faces nearby, but plan to share space on summer weekends. Rigging happens on the bank above the ramp; be aware of other kiters and keep your lines clear of the walkway. The usable wind window runs from south through north-northwest (180°–359°), with the reliable pattern sitting in the southwest quadrant. Southwest winds of 15–25 knots are the consistent story from spring through fall, arriving as clean afternoon flow that the wide Sound channels well. Wind tends to read clearly out here — what you feel at the launch is close to what you'll get on the water. The water character is what gives this spot its reputation. Shallow and flat throughout, Pamlico Sound is ideal for beginners working on water starts and getting time in the harness. That same flat surface suits freestyle riders who want clean landings without chop interference. Intermediates and advanced riders have plenty of room to push upwind — the Sound is wide enough that you won't run out of space. Hazards are worth knowing: boat traffic shares the ramp and uses the Sound throughout the season, so a visible kite flag and constant awareness are basics, not optionals. Shallow water means sandbars, and they shift — check locally if you're heading downwind into unfamiliar territory. Be mindful of turbulence close to the bank at launch; walk your lines clear before committing to a water start. For accommodation, Avon Motel and Avon Cottages are both within roughly 2.5 km of the ramp. Food within easy reach includes Ketch 55 at around 1.7 km, Burger Burger and Howards Tap Shack within 1.8 km, and Hatteras Island Seafood Boils at about 2.4 km. Cups and Cones covers the post-session coffee and ice cream at similar distance. Spring and fall offer the best combination of consistent wind and manageable crowds. Summer weekends pack the ramp — get there early or expect a full car park and a crowded launch zone. If your trip is wind-focused, spring through fall is the window to target.
