Salvo sits mid-way along North Carolina's Outer Banks, a narrow barrier island separating the Atlantic from the vast, shallow expanse of Pamlico Sound. The sound runs flat here — a natural setting for kite sessions that trade open-ocean chop for organised, predictable water. Access is through the Ramp 23 area, a public point that drops you directly onto the sound side. You launch from sand straight into the water — clean entry, no rocks, no wading through shorebreak. Power up your kite, walk to the edge, and you're in. The crowd count is the first thing you'll notice. Salvo is noticeably quieter than Hatteras, which draws most of the kite traffic on this stretch of the Banks. Here you can lay out your lines without someone walking through them, ride without the usual shoulder-to-shoulder ramp dynamics. On days when the popular spots are packed, Salvo often has breathing room. That matters — both for safety and for getting the most out of a session. The wind arc runs from 180° to 359°, covering south, southwest, west, northwest, and winds approaching due north. South and southwest flow — which arrives consistently here — delivers a solid angle over the sound's flat surface. Shallow depth and the surrounding landmass tend to keep conditions from turning lumpy even when wind picks up, which is part of what makes this water so reliable for building skills. For skill level, Salvo leans accessible. The flat water and consistent southwest flow make it a real option for beginners getting comfortable with water starts and body drags. More experienced riders will find it a clean, low-stress session or a good spot to coach someone else. It's not a wave spot — that's not what this place is for. The draw is straightforward, uncomplicated riding on forgiving ground. Palazzolo Express, a local restaurant, gives you somewhere to refuel post-session. Beyond that, the ramp is a basic public access point — bring your own gear and supplies, as there's no kite school or rental operation here. Pamlico Sound is open water and can build quickly when the wind gets going, so think through your downwind exits before you push far out from shore. The flat surface is an advantage, not a reason to switch your brain off. Otherwise, this is one of the more approachable sound-side sessions on the Outer Banks: good wind angle, flat water, and enough space to breathe.
