Cape Point is the southern tip of Hatteras Island, a narrow barrier island on North Carolina's Outer Banks that extends into the open Atlantic south of the Buxton Lighthouse. It's one of the most storied surf-kite locations on the US East Coast — a spot where Atlantic swell, strong coastal winds, and extensive offshore shoals combine to create conditions that are demanding, dynamic, and genuinely rewarding. Getting to the launch means passing through Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Access narrows closer to the tip of the point, so check current beach access conditions before heading out. The parking area is within the National Seashore near the point. The launch is on the Atlantic side — an open beach directly facing the ocean. What defines Cape Point are the shallow sandbars that extend well offshore, creating breaking wave zones far from the beach. Channels cut between the bars, and rip currents are a constant presence. Before you rig up, take time to read the water: where the bars are breaking, where the channels run, and which way the current is moving all matter here. Wind runs strong from both northeast and southwest year-round. Northeast is the classic direction — it loads up the wave faces over the outer bars and produces textbook surf-kite conditions, with long rides across shallow water. The exposed position of the point means the wind here is rarely gentle; gusts and pressure changes exist, but the overall character is powerful and consistent. This is an expert-level spot. Waves, current, a complex shoal field, and a fully exposed Atlantic position combine to create an environment where wave-reading skills and confident self-rescue are baseline requirements. Surf-kiting, surf foiling, and directional riding are what make sense here — flat-water freestyle is not what Cape Point is offering.
