About Kite Point · Hatteras Island

Kite Point sits on the Pamlico Sound side of Hatteras Island, roughly midway between the villages of Avon and Buxton. The Sound here is your friend — flat water, waist-deep for hundreds of feet from shore, and forgiving enough to suit riders at most levels. The Atlantic is just over the dune line in the other direction, but you're not kiting there today. Getting there requires a small amount of local knowledge. The access road off NC-12 is unmarked, so first-timers regularly sail past it. If you've booked a session with Kitty Hawk Kites Kiteboarding School nearby, they'll put you right — otherwise, a quick ask at the school is still worth the detour. Parking at the launch is informal; there's no infrastructure here, so arrive self-sufficient. The wind pattern is the spot's main draw. From June through July, a reliable SW thermal builds through the afternoon, typically filling in from around 3 pm and peaking toward evening. Once it's running it tends to hold — the kind of thermal cycle that lets you plan your day around it rather than gamble. On shoulder-season days in spring and autumn, NE winds also bring the spot to life. The usable arc runs from south through west to north, so both SW and NE sit comfortably in the window. Water character does the heavy lifting here. Flat, shallow, and warm by mid-season — this is close to textbook for water starts and carving laps without depth anxiety. Beginners benefit from the gradual entry and room to self-rescue; if you drop the kite, you can usually walk to it. Intermediates can drill technique without the ocean's interference. Advanced riders will find less challenge in the water itself, but as a freestyle and freeride training ground it's clean and efficient. There are no waves, so if that's what you're chasing, you need to be on the Atlantic side. The season runs March through November. Summer thermals are the most reliable; shoulder-season winds are real but weather can turn quickly, especially in spring — dress for the air temperature, not the water. After the session, options are close. Good Winds Restaurant and Mirro's Cafe are solid for post-kite recovery; Leonardo's Pizza and Boardwok South cover dinner; Dairy Queen does its job. For overnight stays, Camp Hatteras RV Resort & Campground, Cape Hatteras / Outer Banks KOA, Cedar Hammock RV Park, and Lazy Days Campground form a practical campground belt along the island — well suited to gear-heavy kite trips.
