About Mui Ne

Mui Ne sits on a southeast-facing pocket of coastline in Bình Thuận province, roughly 220km northeast of Ho Chi Minh City — close enough for a long weekend from Saigon, far enough that it keeps its own rhythm. The town stretches along a single beach road, Nguyen Dinh Chieu, lined with guesthouses, kite schools, and the kind of seafood restaurants that justify a post-session appetite. Getting here is straightforward: bus, rental car, or motorbike from Ho Chi Minh City along the coastal highway, with the beach road running parallel to the ocean the entire way. The kite beach is a long sandy strip opening directly onto the South China Sea. Wind arc runs from 45° through 225°, which puts the Northeast monsoon squarely in the usable window — and the NE monsoon is exactly what makes this place tick. From November through April, the gió chướng (northeast trade wind) sweeps down from the north and hits this SE-facing coast at an angle that's almost textbook side-onshore. You're launching into wind that's already organized and has reach behind it. The dunes are the secret weapon. Mui Ne's famous red and white sand dunes sit directly upwind of the beach, and on clear afternoons they heat up fast in the tropical sun. That thermal layer funnels into the sea breeze cycle and can push afternoon winds noticeably stronger than the morning session — riders who arrive at 1pm often find conditions 3–5 knots livelier than the 10am crowd. Peak months (December through February) typically serve 18–25 knots; lighter shoulder conditions in November and March can still provide solid riding with a bigger kite on the bar. Inshore, the water is relatively flat — shallow, sandy bottom, good for waterstarting and board recovery. Push further out and you hit more chop and the occasional swell from the open sea. There's a long downwinder run along the beach that works well when the wind holds its angle. The main hazard is fishing traffic: local fishing boats operate on and offshore throughout the day, and it's your job to route around them. Keep your kite visible, spot boats before committing to a run, and stay alert near the water's edge where smaller vessels beach and launch. The strip also fills with sunbathers and tourists in peak season — give yourself room on launch and landing. Most kite operations set up directly on the beach. Schools are plentiful, staffed by experienced local and expat instructors, making Mui Ne one of the more accessible destinations in Southeast Asia for lessons. Facilities are solid: coffee moon sits practically on the beach for pre-session caffeine, and ăn hải sản and biển đông handle post-session meals around a kilometre down the road. Accommodation runs the full spectrum from beachside resorts to budget guesthouses in the back lanes.
