Phu Quy is a small island sitting roughly 100 kilometres out into the South China Sea from Phan Thiet, and the lagoon tucked into its northeastern tip is about as far from the kitesurf crowds as you can get in Vietnam. Getting here requires a boat crossing from Phan Thiet — this is not a day-trip spot — and that filter alone keeps the water nearly to yourself. The lagoon itself is flat and shallow, the kind of water that stays predictable even when the wind is stacking up hard. You can stand across most of it, which takes the sting out of a bad water start and gives beginners a genuine safety net. Advanced riders get the same clean canvas but can push the power — there is nothing here stopping you from going fast or going long. The wind is the whole reason to make the crossing. Phu Quy sits fully exposed to the open ocean, and the NE trade winds blow straight onto the northeastern end of the island with nothing in the way. The usable arc runs from roughly 230° to 30°, meaning the dominant northeast direction sits squarely in the window. November through April, those trades deliver 20 to 45 knots on a regular basis — this is considered one of the windiest spots in the region, and the high-end sessions are real, not occasional. Launching is uncomplicated. The shallow water lets you walk the kite out, get your lines sorted, and beach-start cleanly without needing to time anything around waves or current. If the kite goes down, the shallows are forgiving. The flat bottom also means you ride without fighting chop, which makes the spot genuinely welcoming for beginners working on their basics and genuinely fast for experienced riders who want uninterrupted rail time. Facilities are sparse by design — this is a remote island, not a kite resort. Long Vi Hotel covers accommodation. Do Re Mi and Sea La Vie Inspiring Phu Quy are the two restaurants in range. There is no kite school, no gear hire, and no repair shop nearby. Everything you need on the water, you bring with you. That remoteness is the thing to plan around. A snapped bar or blown kite means you are done unless you packed a backup, because the mainland crossing is not something you arrange on short notice. Think of Phu Quy as a multi-day kite trip rather than a hop across the water. Come with full gear, spares, and a week to use the wind properly. The reward is consistent, powerful, uncrowded sessions on some of the most reliable trade wind in Vietnam.
