About Barra do Cunhaú

Barra do Cunhaú sits at the mouth of the Cunhaú River, about 75 kilometres south of Natal on the coast of Rio Grande do Norte. It is a spot worth planning a trip around: a five-kilometre dune-backed beach that curves around a flat-water lagoon, consistent E/SE trade winds running 15–25 knots for much of the year, and enough open beach to accommodate hundreds of kites without feeling crowded. The roughly 75-kilometre drive from Natal follows the coast south to the river-mouth area, where the right-bank beach and the lagoon entrance offer two distinct riding environments within easy walking distance of each other. On the right-bank beach, the wind comes in side-shore — a classic fast-riding setup good for carving and boosting, but one that demands confident upwind riding and a reliable water relaunch. On the lagoon, the angle shifts to side-onshore, which gives you a more forgiving entry point if you are still building consistency or want to work on flat-water freestyle without the consequences of drifting into open ocean. The lagoon is the headline act. The water stays flat even when the wind is up, and the space is enormous — the kind of arena where you can lap endlessly, work on unhooked tricks, or just enjoy clean long rides without obstacles. Riders with more experience will find the right-bank beach delivers choppier water and more dynamic conditions when they want something with a bit more edge. The usable wind arc runs from 305° through to 95°, a generous window that keeps the spot rideable across a range of wind patterns. The dominant E/SE trades sit well within that arc. July through January is the main season, and this stretch consistently delivers. Facilities are solid for a spot at this level. For accommodation, Pousada Vila da Barra and Filho do Vento Kitelodge are the closest options, both within roughly 1,200 metres of the beach. Pousada Mirante Do Cunhaú, Pousada Cunhaú, Recanto dos Coqueiros, and Pousada chalanas do Cunhau provide further alternatives nearby. Dr.kiteschool Pedro Soares operates locally for instruction and on-the-ground knowledge. For food, Barraca Central is the nearest restaurant, with Boteco Beach and Hibiscus Café Bistrô a bit further along the coast. Main things to be aware of: river-mouth currents near the bar can run stronger than they look from the bank, so check the flow before launching close to the channel. On the beach side, downwind drift is a real factor — the beach is long but you still need to manage your upwind position. Come with water relaunch squared away and you will find the spot very manageable. Intermediates and above will find Barra do Cunhaú works well for them. The lagoon provides the more accessible entry point; the beach side raises the bar. It is a genuine kite destination in northeast Brazil — not just a bonus stop on the coastal road.
