Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil
World-class wave and kite spot at Praia do Amor in Pipa village; E-to-SE winds 14–22 kt side-onshore on the south-facing cliff-backed bay; excellent wave riding and flat water at nearby Barra do Cunhaú lagoon.
Pipa sits on the northeastern tip of Brazil in Rio Grande do Norte, a village that has built its reputation on dramatic clifftop scenery and world-class surf. Praia do Amor — Beach of Love — is the south-facing bay tucked beneath those cliffs, and when the wind fills in from the east or southeast, it becomes one of the most talked-about kite spots in South America. The approach runs through Pipa village itself. The beach is reached via paths that descend the cliffs to the sand below, and the bay opens southward to open ocean. The cliffs rise behind you as you launch, forming a natural backstop to the north while leaving the full fetch of the South Atlantic ahead. Wind here runs E-to-SE, arriving side-onshore across this south-facing bay — typically in the 14–22 knot range. That angle means you're not fighting a direct onshore blow, but you're not fully cross-shore either. The result is a clean wave window: you can work the breaking swell with real kite power without being driven straight onto the beach. The usable wind arc spans 90° through to 270°, giving you everything from due east to due west via south — a generous range for a beach that faces open Atlantic swell. The waves are the headline act. This is not a learner flat-water patch; the swell that reaches Praia do Amor is the real thing, and the best sessions reward riders who can combine wave reading with solid kite control. Intermediates can manage it in lighter, smaller conditions, but the spot earns its reputation toward the top of that 18–22 knot window, when the waves are clean and the kite is properly loaded. If you want flat water — for a progression day, a change of pace, or when the swell is running too large — the lagoon at Barra do Cunhaú is nearby and offers a completely different texture: calm, warm, and well suited to freeride or technique work. Back on land, Pipa village looks after you well. For cafés and quick stops there's Açaí da Pipa, Curva do Vento, Cami's Café, Barracada Neide, E Dodia, and Estação Pipa Brew. Sit-down meals come from Chen, Churrascaria Dona Branca, Jerimum, and Lig Peg — a solid range from local northeastern cooking to grilled meat. One thing to factor in before every session: the clifftop geography means you need a clear downwind escape route before your kite goes up. The bay is well-shaped for the prevailing wind angle, but the edges can be tighter than they look from above. Check your exit before you launch.
