Praia do Cunhaú sits on the northeastern coast of Rio Grande do Norte, positioned near the town of Pipa. What sets it apart from a standard coastal launch is the Barra do Cunhaú — the meeting point of the Cunhaú river and lagoon system with the open Atlantic. That geography gives this spot a dual character: open ocean on one side, sheltered flat water in the river mouth on the other. Getting here, you are arriving via the coast road that connects the Pipa area. The beach is less developed than Pipa proper — fewer people, fewer services. No kite facilities are listed at the spot itself, so arrive self-sufficient: rigged gear, your own tools, water and food sorted before you reach the sand. When the easterly wind fills in at 14–22 knots, the ocean beach delivers side-onshore conditions. Side-onshore is a workable angle — you are not fighting an offshore pull, and a swim-in means heading toward the sand rather than out to sea. The ocean side carries the chop you would expect from an exposed Atlantic beach: readable but present, enough texture to keep intermediate and experienced riders honest. The river mouth and sheltered water inside the lagoon system shift the picture considerably. Calmer, flatter, and more forgiving, that zone earns the spot its beginner-friendly reputation. New riders working on water starts and kite control get a genuinely sheltered environment rather than having to battle open ocean surface. Mixed-level groups can split between the two areas and both come away having used their time well. The usable wind arc runs 0° through 180°, covering the full north and east quadrant.
