About Guriú

Guriú sits on the Ceará coastline roughly midway between Jericoacoara and Tatajuba — a quiet fishing village that delivers two distinct kite experiences from the same stretch of shore. On one side, a flat-water lagoon opens at high tide, glassy and wide enough to link freestyle tricks without worrying about chop. On the ocean side, a cross-onshore beach gives you a livelier session with trade-wind chop and more moving water underfoot. The Northeast-to-East trade winds arrive side-onshore on starboard tack, typically running 15–25 knots from July through January. That wind angle pushes you back toward the beach rather than out to sea — a built-in safety margin that makes Guriú noticeably forgiving during longer sessions or when you're still building confidence. Intermediates who find Jericoacoara's crowd and chop overwhelming often prefer it here. The ocean section still carries cross-onshore chop, so it's worth assessing conditions before committing to a launch. The lagoon is where Guriú earns its reputation. Flood it with high tide and you have flat-water conditions that reward freestyle riding — board-offs, darkslides, transitions — without the variable surface of the ocean. The catch is that the lagoon shrinks at low tide, so you need to time your session to the tidal cycle. Check the tide before planning your day; arriving at low tide and waiting for the water level to rise is a common timing mistake. Getting there means navigating Ceará's coastal tracks, which run dusty in the dry season and muddier after rain. A 4WD transfer from Jericoacoara is the standard approach; local pousadas can often help arrange reliable transport. There's no paved access or organised car park directly at the beach launch. The village infrastructure is modest but covers the essentials. DuMangue Kite House and Guriú Kite School both operate locally, handling lessons and equipment for visiting riders. Accommodation runs to four options: ARATU Pousada, Pousada Cavalo Marinho, Casa Teçá, and Casa Uca, each with a genuinely local feel. Mama Zélia and Rei Gastrobar cover sit-down meals; EL-BURGUER GURIU and Esfiha's Mania Guriú CE handle quicker bites between sessions. Guriú is quieter and less developed than Jericoacoara, which is precisely why people seek it out. The crowd is thin, the lagoon flat water is a legitimate reason to make the journey, and the conditions are as clean and uncomplicated as kiting gets in northeast Brazil. Come between July and January, work around the tides, and it typically delivers.
