Kep West Beach sits on a west-to-southwest-facing shoreline with the forested hills of Kep Province rising behind the town. It's not a flashy or well-known kite destination, but it has something genuinely worth the detour: a reliable southwest monsoon window in a setting that remains refreshingly low-key. Getting there from Phnom Penh is a straightforward overland journey of a few hours by road or bus. The Kampot area is also a reasonable base, given the short distance between the two towns. Kep itself is small enough that finding the waterfront takes no effort. The beach faces the prevailing southwest monsoon squarely, which is why it works during the wet season. Wind arrives across a broad arc — 150° through 330° — meaning you get solid side-to-side-onshore or slightly cross-onshore angles depending on the exact direction on any given day. Typical monsoon strength runs 14–20 knots through the May–September window. The water is a blend of flat sections closer to shore and increasing chop further out, as you'd expect in a semi-sheltered bay open to the Gulf.
