Kouchibouguac sits on one of Atlantic Canada's most overlooked coastlines: a long, east-facing barrier beach inside a national park on the Gulf of St. Lawrence, in New Brunswick. That national park designation keeps the place genuinely pristine — the kind of beach where sea birds outnumber kite bags on most days. Getting here means paying the park entrance fee at the gate. From the parking area, you'll walk out to the beach — bring a wheeled kite bag or a second pair of hands for the carry. Kelly's Beach is the main access point. Once you're there, you'll find wide, dune-backed sand with room to rig and launch without fighting for space. The water is the real story. The Gulf of St. Lawrence here is very shallow and, by Canadian standards, genuinely warm in summer — a welcome contrast to the cold Atlantic you might expect. You can wade out a long way before it gets deep, which makes it a forgiving environment for anyone still building confidence on the water. A stumbled landing or a downwind drift is far less punishing when the water stays knee-deep for a long stretch out. Wind works from north, northeast, east, and southeast — the 0° to 180° arc gives you an onshore or cross-onshore window across that east-facing beach. Summer fronts and sea breezes push through the Gulf from June through September. You won't find consistent daily thermal cycles here, so the forecast matters: pick your days and you'll score clean, ridable conditions. This is a genuinely good spot for intermediates and progressing riders. Flat, shallow water is ideal for board control, transitions, and building speed without punishing chop. More experienced riders can run downwinders along the beach when the wind angle allows. Just remember you're in a national park — respect marked swimming areas, give other beach users a wide berth when launching and landing, and keep clear of the sea birds, especially earlier in the season when nesting activity is at its peak. For food on-site, Cantine Plage Kelly's Beach is right there. Lafiouk Diner is another option nearby. Accommodation in the area includes Kouch Chalets, L'Ancrage Bed & Breakfast and Cottages, Gîte Soleil Couchant, and Coop Camping Parc Daigle Park for those who prefer camping. Best season runs June through September. July and August are the warmest and most comfortable months. June and September tend to be quieter and can still deliver solid conditions — just pack a layer for the mornings. This is a spot that rewards the effort: park fee, a walk, and a forecast worth waiting for. Most kiters never make it here. That's exactly why it's worth knowing about.
