About Dahab Blue Lagoon

Twenty kilometres north of Dahab, past the last cluster of dive shops and Bedouin camps, the road runs out and the Blue Lagoon begins. Getting here is half the experience: a 45-minute camel ride across the desert plateau, or a short boat transfer from the town beach — there is no car park, no signposted turn-off, and that is precisely the point. The lagoon rewards the effort with some of the most consistent flat-water conditions in the world. The setting is immediately striking. The lagoon sits in a wide rocky bay where the Gulf of Aqaba narrows the wind corridor, funnelling a steady NNE thermal down from Jordan and Israel. On most days from spring through to early autumn, that wind arrives with conviction — typically in the 20 to 25 knot range, often pushing 30 by mid-afternoon. The water is the colour of polished turquoise glass and sits knee-to-hip-deep across most of the riding area, which means a crash here lands on a wet sandbar rather than reef. That shallow, flat surface is what brings kiters back year after year. Launching is straightforward once you are settled: a wide sandy shore on the western edge of the lagoon gives good lines in most conditions. The NNE arc means the wind is broadly side-to-side-shore, which keeps the setup manageable. Still, the remoteness demands self-sufficiency — there are no kite schools on site, no rental shop, and no rescue service to call if something goes wrong. Bring a full repair kit and know how to use it. The riding itself is addictive. Flat water, constant pressure, and a good 400 to 500 metres of usable lagoon length makes this a freestyle and freeride playground. Downwinders deeper into the gulf are possible for experienced riders, but watch the rocky shoreline on the eastern edge — it looks swimmable from a distance but gets sharp quickly. Current picks up on outgoing tides and can push you toward the reef break at the lagoon mouth. There are no permanent facilities here. A few Bedouin tea vendors may be set up nearby depending on the season, but do not count on it. Pack water, sunscreen, and enough food for a full day. Shade is minimal once the sun climbs. The nearest proper meal and accommodation is back in Dahab, where the kite community is well-established and equipment servicing is available. Best conditions typically run March through June and again September through November. Summer delivers more wind but also intense heat; winter is quieter, with lighter and more variable conditions. This is not a beginner spot — the remoteness, the depth changes near the reef mouth, and the absence of rescue support make it firmly intermediate-to-advanced territory.
